So I’ve been going on job interviews in the past few weeks. Today I was interviewing at a company who’s name I will not say but I was asked some rather strange questions. I’m not sure if these questions are cool to ask during an interview or not. To me these questions have nothing to do with letting them know about my skills or work ethics. I was asked:

1) How old are you?

2) Do you still live with your parents?

3) Are you married?

Is it cool to ask these questions during interviews? Or am I just being paranoid and pedantic?

Kinja'd!!!

Anyways, have a BRZ for your time.

***Edit: forgot to add the third question***

Number 1 is definitely illegal, assuming you’re in the U.S.

They can ask anything they want so long as the info is not used for discrimination of potential employees. You also have the right to not answer any question if it makes you feel uncomfortable.

Yeah they can’t ask you how old you are.

That isn’t true.

What type of work/do you look kind of young? The only thing I could think of is that the age one might be legal if you’re working with machinery/kids/alcohol where you might be required to be over 18 or 21 or whatever

Age is definitely illegal unless their is an age requirement for the job. Like working at a liquor store or something.

Hmm interesting. I am in the US. The guy asking me wrote down my age and boxed it on my resume. Then he asked if I was married.

Age or Birthday I am used too as it has to do with if I am legal to do certain tasks or if I get to be held accountable. As for the parents...that is odd...I’d likely respond with sarcasm. “Willing to live with parents if I get the job.”

There was an article on Lifehacker earlier this month on this topic.

Also illegal. Was this a large corporation, small business, mom and pop shop?

It was for a manufacturing technician position. I’ve been told I look a lot older than I am by almost everyone I know.

They can not legally ask the first question, not sure on the second one. If it was a position at a company you were not to serious about getting you should have asked the interviewer the same questions when they do the whole wrap up thing and ask if you have any questions.

Holy shit! They can’t do that either!

That seems sketchy of them then. The only time an age is acceptable is if you’re making the offer and need to get health/life insurance benefits quotes

It was a semi-startup solar company. So small business I guess.

Man! I should’ve thought of that! I should’ve wasted their time. I got a seriously sketchy vibe from them so even if I did got an offer I’d have declined it.

Depending on how things turn out you might inform them that those questions are illegal to ask.

Yeah, I’m beginning to think/realize almost 3/4 of the questions the first boss asked me were illegal to ask.

I would follow up (especially if you don’t get the job) and let them know that you are aware that they are asking illegal questions during interviews. That isn’t ok.

1 is only illegal if the job has nothing to do with age, though if it’s a job which is only legally allowed to be working by 18+ or 21+ it’s fine. 2 isn’t illegal, but not really relevant. 3 isn’t illegal, but again not relevant.

Kinja'd!!! Sam > BrtStlnd

They can ask if there is a relevant reason, such as a job working at a bar or a factory.

Technically all they could ask in that situation would be “Are you over the age of 18/21?”

Sounds like it’s best to stay away from them. Not sure about #2, but #’s 1 and 3 are definitely illegal to ask in the US.

and those are weird questions minus the age thing. But still kinda goes against the discrimination laws don’t they?

I recommended the post because Addicted put his photo in desktop size (all photos should be uploaded that size). That being said, he should probably respond to those questions simply by saying “I post on jalopnik”
